    ASSISTANT DIRECTOR & GALLERY MANAGER POSITION

    ORGANIZATIONAL DESCRIPTION

    Valley Art Center (VAC) enriches and inspires the community through meaningful visual art education, exhibitions, events, and partnerships. Valley Art Center, a 501c3 nonprofit organization with 50 years of history, continues to thrive as the hub of the visual arts in the Chagrin Valley. Each year, we offer over 400 classes, workshops, and summer camps for students, from children to seniors, who range from beginner to seasoned professional. We offer year-round onsite, offsite, and virtual classes in drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking, sculpture, photography, jewelry, metalwork, textiles, and more. VAC’s gallery hosts over 5 exhibits annually with curated, invitational, and juried shows. Our calls to entry draw local, regional, and national artists from the Cleveland area and beyond. The Valley Art Center Gift Shop and gallery host hundreds of unique original pieces of art for sale. Our flagship art festival, Art by the Falls, draws over 10,000 annually to Chagrin Falls with over 120 artists exhibiting. VAC is engaged in numerous local and regional community partnerships and outreach efforts.

    TITLE: Assistant Director & Gallery Manager (AD & GM)

    REPORTS TO: The Executive Director

    JOB STATUS: Full time, exempt

    POSITION OVERVIEW AND LEADERSHIP PROFILE

    The Valley Art Center is seeking an Assistant Director and Gallery Manager to oversee all areas of gallery management and marketing strategies, and support the Executive Director in the areas of fundraising, programming, events and other general operation management in alignment with VAC’s mission. The ideal candidate's attributes include strong managerial, organizational, and relationship building skills, as well as the ability to successfully work independently and in teams. Prior gallery management experience is extremely beneficial, but not required. The successful candidate will have the opportunity for advancement in the future at Valley Art Center. The Assistant Director will build upon the positive VAC work culture and demonstrate leadership skills in the management, motivation, and development of professional staff.

    PRIMARY ROLE / RESPONSIBILITIES (INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO)

    • Oversees all gallery related activities at Valley Art Center including maintaining organizational calendar of exhibitions, communications with artists and jurors/curators, managing calls to entry, coordination of receiving/pick up of artwork and artist contracts, leading the Gallery Committee, managing and executing gallery sales, planning and executing gallery events in collaboration with the Events Manager, building relationships with artists, and coordinating hanging of exhibitions.
    • Directly manage the planning, schedule, development, and execution of marketing materials in accordance with the strategic marketing goals across all organizational programming and media platforms; Maintain organizational branding.
    • Assist the Executive Director with executing strategic goals with regards to pr/marketing, education, outreach, Art by the Falls, fundraising, development, technology, and facilities.
    • Assist the Executive Director and work closely with external designers/developers to update the website for all information relating to organizational programming, events, etc.
    • Maintain close communication with the Executive Director and VAC staff to ensure smooth operation and timely solutions to challenges.
    • Build and maintain relationships with members, instructors, artists, students, donors and patrons as needed.
    • Assists the Executive Director in overseeing and executing the VAC’s Strategic Plan.
    • Directly manage the Gift Shop Manager/Registrar and Office Assistant/Registrar/Historian as well as coverage schedule for customer service desk.
    • Create and maintain contact lists for students, members, artists, art organizations, etc.
    • Ensure that all COVID 19 guidelines for safety are observed.

    Non-Gallery Programming

    Education

    • Oversee the smooth execution of student registrations onsite in conjunction with the remote

    Program Manager, including directly overseeing the staff registrars.

    • Support the Executive Director and Program Manager in the design and execution of a robust curriculum that is cohesive, relevant, broad and equitable in accordance with the strategic plan.
    • Support the Executive Director and Program Manager in building relationships with existing and potential teachers.
    • Support the Executive Director and Program Manager to maintain and plan educational spaces to ensure optimal learning experiences.

    Art by the Falls

    • Support the Executive Director and Events Manager in the execution of all activities associated with

    Art by the Falls including artists, volunteers, sponsorships, vendors, marketing, public relations, etc.

    • Be onsite for the entire set-up and festival (Thursday – Sunday) to support this flagship event.

    Gift Shop

    • Oversee the Gift Shop Manager in the development of a strong and compelling collection of artist work, marketing, and overall operations of the gift shop onsite and online.

    Finance

    • Support the Executive Director in the development of financial budgets and reports.
    • Support the Executive Director in the management of revenue and expenses across all areas of operation.

    Fundraising, Development and Marketing

    • Support the Executive Director in all aspects of fundraising including the annual appeal, annual fundraiser, donor development donor contact information and expanding donor base.
    • Support the Executive Director in the execution of fundraising strategy and maintaining annual fundraising and development calendar.
    • Support the Executive Director in the collection of data for writing, securing and reporting for grants.
    • Support the Executive Director in securing sponsors for gallery exhibits, educational programming, fundraisers, and other events as needed.
    • Lead efforts in conjunction with the Executive Director and the Marketing Committee in the design of marketing plan in alignment with the overall Strategic Plan.

    Outreach and Community Partnerships

    • Represent VAC and raise community awareness on the local and regional landscape.
    • Support the Executive Director in the engagement of local community schools, organizations, businesses, and non-profit organizations.

    Technology and Facilities

    • Support Executive Director and Facilities Manager in overseeing technology needs, maintenance, etc. as needed.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES

    Leadership Competencies and Attributes: Strong ideals and integrity with collaborative, organizational, and operational planning and management abilities. Positive attitude, creative, inclusive, self-directed team player who thinks strategically to transform ideas into concrete and high- impact outcomes and partnerships. Passion for VAC’s mission is a must.

    Education, Experience and Knowledge:

    • Qualified candidates will possess an undergraduate degree in a related field with at least 3 years of relevant experience, or combination of education and experience equivalent with evidence of successful management of related activities. Preference will be given to candidates with a degree in arts administration, business administration, non-profit management, or other relevant degree.

    Understanding of the arts and art exhibitions is a plus.

    • Demonstrated ability to build partnerships and collaborate successfully across a diverse group of stakeholders to meet mutually agreed upon outcomes.
    • Managerial experience and demonstrated competency, including an understanding of budgets, schedules, and timelines.
    • Knowledge of the region’s local education, arts, and culture ecosystems.

    Hours: This is a permanent full-time position. Hours are 9AM to 5PM with some evening and weekend commitments.

    Compensation and Benefits: Salary and employment package commensurate with experience and organization's budget. Benefits include medical insurance, professional development, vacation, and sick time.
