Senior Project Mentor Opportunity
I am writing to introduce myself and share some information about the Chagrin Falls High School Senior Project. First and foremost, I would like to thank you for helping and generating interest in our program at the school. This project is a great collaboration between the school, community organizations, businesses, and our students that is a truly rewarding experience for them.
Our senior project historically has been a two to three week internship in May (students have been required to log 50 to 75 hours) depending on how the calendar falls in relationship to the end of the school year. Students shadow, intern, work with, and/or learn from a professional during that time period. Students’ experiences vary considerably depending on the occupation or organization that they are with during the project. Past student placements have included doctors, lawyers, businesses, media outlets, sports franchises, government offices, and law enforcement. Some of our students go overseas or out of state, and notable past projects include the World Health Organization, New York financial companies, and music studios in Los Angeles. Although the vast majority of our students find placements locally, experiences have included observing surgeries, developing sales presentations, and using engineering software to design buildings.
The commitment from a mentor (individual at an organization hosting one of our students) includes supervising or overseeing the student’s activities during the project. Some have students stay with them the entire project and others have them get a feel for the entire organization or profession by working in other departments or areas of the placement. The mentor signs off that the student has completed necessary hours and is welcome to participate in the evaluations and showcase at the conclusion of the project. Members of our faculty and administration communicate with the placements to make sure things are running smoothly and are available if there are any questions or concerns. I would be more than happy to meet with you or answer any questions, and I appreciate any support from the Chamber on this great experience for our students.”
