Jim Tully: Rediscovering a Lost Ohio Writer
Come to the Chagrin Falls Branch Library and let Paul J. Bauer and Mark Dawidziak introduce you to the subject of their just-published biography, Jim Tully: American Writer, Irish Rover, Hollywood Brawler. A literary superstar of the 1920s and '30s, Tully wrote about the American underclass: hobos, carnival workers, con artists and boxers. Along the way, this hobo author worked for Charlie Chaplin, interviewed James Joyce and picked up such pals as W.C. Fields, H.L. Mencken, Frank Capra, Jimmy Cagney, Jack Dempsey and Damon Runyon. The presentation includes the only known film footage of Tully, the first writer to seriously address the Irish-American immigrant experience. Bauer is a book seller in Kent, OH, and Dawidziak is the television critic for The Plain Dealer. Books will be available for purchase and signing, courtesy of The Friends of the Chagrin Falls Library. Registration is requested for this free event (440-247-3556).
